Families, especially dads celebrating their special day, were given an unforgettable experience with grilled food during the “Thrill for the Grill” event last Father’s Day, June 19.

The Town Plaza in Alabang Town Center was filled with the sizzling sounds and the mouthwatering aroma of choice meat cuts grilled right in front of the eager crowd. Handling the grill was Chef Michael Yap, Vice President and COO of Global Academy, who also talked about the art of grilling.

“No other cooking method can achieve the same quality that grilling imparts on food,” Yap explained, noting that the smoky, charred aroma distinguishes grilling from other cooking methods.

To prove his point, Yap grilled picanha and ribeye steaks, along with English sausages and an assortment of seasonal vegetables. Each visitor was then treated with a sample of these meats fresh off the grill.

Not all types of food can be grilled, according to Yap. During his live demo, he explained that grilling works best with ingredients that are naturally tender, such as fish and poultry. For beef and pork, the tender cuts can be found between the shoulder and the waist, since these are the parts that are the least exercised.

Apart from his expertise in grilling, Yap is no stranger to other cooking methods. He trained with Michelin-starred chefs, including Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin and Laurent Tourondel of Cello, and has been a World Chefs-Certified Continental Culinary Competition Judge since 2014.

Grilling made easier
Yap acknowledged that some people are intimidated by grilling, “Grilling intimidates people because of its unconventional approach, since it’s up to you to tame the flame.” Still, he maintained that grilling could be easy, especially with the right tools.

Tools are one of the four T’s of grilling, along with time, temperature, and technique, according to Chef William Lum of Weber Singapore. For his demonstration, Yap made use of a Weber gas grill, along with an assortment of grill products from the brand.

The Weber brand has been highly-regarded among grilling enthusiasts all around the world. Touting itself as a brand “by grillers for grillers”, Weber has been the grillers’ choice of equipment for the past seven decades. Yap also noted that Weber’s gas grills are able to achieve the same smoky flavor one can get from a coal grill.
