Plan International teams up with Visa to improve financial literacy among Filipino youth

Plan International, an independent humanitarian organization, announced its partnership with Visa, a leader in digital payments, to promote financial education among the youth and young entrepreneurs in the Philippines.

In a press release sent out in line with International Women’s Day, Plan International said the project aims to benefit young Filipinos “from disadvantaged backgrounds and help girls take better control of their careers, lives, and future.”

The partnership will enhance the financial literacy content in Plan International’s offline-capable and game-based “Hope Town Hero” app. Aside from financial literacy, the app also has lessons on work readiness skills and is equipped with a tool that lets users create financial goals and monitor their monthly budget.

“With the scenarios and interactive activities embedded in the app, we learn more about financial literacy and practical skills while enjoying the mini-games in a safe digital environment,” said Mohamidin, a 24-year-old youth leader from the Philippines.

The program aims to reach 5,000 young users as it will be implemented in tandem with other projects under the Youth Economic Empowerment and Disaster Reduction and Management programs in Metro Manila, Tacloban, Cotabato, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

“At Visa, we believe empowering young people, especially girls, with knowledge of formal financial systems has significant economic benefits,” said Patsian Low, Vice President of Inclusive Impact & Sustainability at Visa. She added that the partnership with Plan International is “just one way we are delivering on our purpose to uplift everyone, everywhere by being the best way to pay and be paid.”

Plan International, on the other hand, said the tie-up supports its commitment to reduce inequalities and promote social and financial stability among the youth.

“Teaching financial literacy to girls and young women is not just about providing them with useful financial tips, it’s also about preparing them to make informed and effective decisions about their finances. With these tools in hand, they can recognize and grab the opportunities that can push their potential and improve their quality of life,” stated Ana Maria Locsin, Country Director of Plan International Philippines.
