A huge curve ball may have been thrown at us this 2020, but at least it gave us something to look forward to with new anime continuing to be released despite the pandemic. This just made anime fans one of the biggest winners of the year, but what’s even more awesome is the lineup for 2021. But before that, let’s recap 2020 first. (Warning: Spoilers up ahead)
Notable series that claimed victory in the past year include returning titles like Haikyuu!, Food Wars, and Kaguya-sama: Love is War, as well as ongoing titles like One Piece, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, and My Hero Academia.
Some new entrants that made waves with their strong debut are Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, Smile Down The Runway, Kakushigoto, The God of High School, Rent-A-Girlfriend, Uzaki-chan Wants To Play, Jujutsu Kaisen, Tonikaku Kawaii, Moriarty the Patriot, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, and Digimon 2020.
These titles aside, the most anticipated anime of 2020 is definitely the final season of Attack on Titan which is set to air today, December 7 in Japan and will also be streamed on Netflix on December 11. Just check out the latest key visual they released.
To make things even more exciting, various studios have been confirming fresh new titles for Winter 2021 and here’s a quick rundown of some titles that you can expect:
7 Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgment – January 6, 2021
Set to conclude on its 4th season, 7 Deadly Sins has had a strong fanbase that followed it since 2015. Following delayed production due to the pandemic, fans can finally see a conclusion to Meliodas and Elizabeth’s 3000-year reincarnation curse, basing right off from the trailer released. With 80 more chapters left to cover for the anime, how will things unfold following Estarossa’s love confession to Elizabeth in the previous season after losing control of consuming three of the 10 Commandments? We will definitely tune in!
Beastars Season 2 – January 6, 2021
Looking for a profound take on Disney’s Zootopia? Check out Beastars as it tackles the different dynamics between species and animal classes set in high school. Beastars’ anime debut showed complex relationships as gray wolf Legoshi struggled with his identity as he chose his love for rabbit Haru. Towards the end of the series, deer Louis succumbs to darkness as he commits murder despite being a kind herbivore. The second season picks up from Louis’ disappearance from the academy and the aftermath of Legoshi’s rampage at a wolf’s den. Pretty intriguing if you ask me!
The Promised Neverland Season 2 – January 7, 2021
One of this season’s most anticipated comebacks is the second season of The Promised Neverland. Picking up exactly from their fresh escape from Grace Field House, Emma, Ray, and the rest of the children make their way into the world unknown to them. What awaits these children and will they be able to survive?
Cells At Work! Season 2 and Cells At Work! CODE BLACK – January 9-10, 2021
Cells At Work! has been praised for its fairly accurate portrayal of the functions of the different cells in the body like Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, and Platelets. They may have taken on a human form, but the storytelling has been quite intriguing as they battled Cancer cells and many more. For its second season, fans are in for a treat as Cells At Work! and its spin-off Cells At Work! CODE BLACK will premiere back-to-back, making a full educational and scientific hour!
World Trigger Season 2 – January 9, 2021
After years of waiting for a second season, World Trigger fans can now rejoice as new episodes are set to be released very soon! What can we expect of Border as he comes to encounter new foes in this upcoming season? What is most intriguing is how the anime will be showcasing the Galopoula Expedition Force. Lucky for Japanese fans, their wait is cut short as it is expected to debut the first episodes in special screenings on Christmas Day. Hang in there!
Horimiya – January 9, 2021
In a sea full of sequels, Horimiya stands out from the pack as it makes its anime debut. The moment it’s TV adaptation was announced, fans of the manga from across the globe dominated social media, creating a hype that drove non-fans curious to see as to what it is about. As far as romcoms go, we expect Horimiya to tick off a lot of boxes as it perfectly matches academic achiever Kyoko Hori and academically-hopeless-otaku Izumi Miyamura as an unlikely pair. Hype is real and should also be in your watchlist!
Dr. Stone: Stone Wars – January 2021
What do you do when the world has been drawn back to the stone age? You explore and rediscovery humanity and this is exactly what Senku just did. With the first season ending with a teaser for the so-called Stone Wars, the follow-up picks right off with the battle between Senku’s scientific rediscoveries and series villain Tsukasa’s idealistic adult-free world. Who will remain triumphant in this new age?
The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2 – January 2021
The quintuplets of the Nakano household are making a comeback and are expected to bring in more fun and crazies following the success of their debut season. Together with their classmate-turned-tutor Futaro, will they finally succeed in school? We’re just pumped for more antics from this exciting bunch as there is never a dull moment with them.
Haven’t had enough yet? Here’s a few more titles to watch out for in the upcoming season:
