Japan Airlines expands network plan for March-May 2022

As economies continue to reopen around the world, local and international travels are slowly picking up. In February, the Philippines also started welcoming back foreign tourists, in an effort to revive its tourism industry.

Similarly, Filipinos are not one to miss out on the fun as well. According to a 2021 year-end survey commissioned by AirAsia Philippines, 7 out of 10 Filipinos are open to traveling locally with Palawan, Boracay, Cebu, Siargao, and Bohol topping the list. Additionally, should other countries ease restrictions, 5 out of 10 Filipinos would like to travel internationally and have identified South Korea, Singapore, and Japan as their top destinations.

With restrictions remaining tight, Japan continues to experience a decrease in tourism activity compared to pre-pandemic figures. The Japan National Tourism Organization only recorded a total of around 246,000 visits for 2021, and even saw its lowest domestic tourism spending in 11 years.

Fortunately, the country’s flag carrier Japan Airlines (JAL) recently released its network plan from March to May 2022. This includes an increase in the number of inbound and outbound flights from international cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Sydney, and even Manila.

Below are the details of JAL’s expanded schedules from March 1-26, 2022.

Aside from the schedules, JAL has also indicated a significant increase in its number of flights overall in comparison to its 2020 service. Flying over a total of 60 routes, the scheduled one-way flights have increased 790 for March 27 to 31, 2022, from only 545 in the previous financial year.

For April and May, the airline recorded 3,199 and 3,164 scheduled one-way flights respectively in FY20. This has now been expanded to 4,740 and 4,712 flights for each month this 2022, not including the flights to Seoul which will be disclosed at a later date.

Other international gateways that JAL has announced include the following per region.

Americas – Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Boston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego, and Vancouver.
Europe – London, Paris, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Moscow, and Vladivostok.
Southeast Asia – Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Delhi, Bengaluru, Jakarta, Manila, Bangkok, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh.
Oceania – Sydney and Melbourne.
East Asia – Beijing, Dalian, Tianjin, Shanghai (Hongqiao/Pudong), Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Seoul (Gimpo), and Taipei (Songshan/Taoyuan).
Hawaii/Guam – Honolulu, Kona, Guam

While this indeed is a good sign for the recovery of air travel, we can only hope that the borders of Japan will soon reopen, especially with 2022 Statista survey results ranking it as the most preferred holiday destination among Filipinos.
