How To Be K-pop’s #TwitterBestFandom

Who won at the 14th Soompi Awards (#SoompiAwards)?

It’s a win again for all K-pop fans as #KpopTwitter sets a new record for the #TwitterBestFandom category of the 14th annual Soompi Awards (#SoompiAwards). The K-pop fandom has always been unique compared to other fanbases, with the colorful lightsticks, fansite culture, and large scale projects.

Fans of underrated K-pop artists are especially committed to making their favorites more popular. Fans are generally active in voting for their favorite idols, so it’s no surprise that by the end of the two separate 24-hour voting periods held exclusively on Twitter, there were over 95 million #TwitterBestFandom tweets, setting a new worldwide record. This year’s winners are EXO-Ls (#TeamEXO) for Twitter Best Fandom, and NCTzens (#TeamNCT) for Rising Fandom Award. Your favorite group may be the next!

Here are three easy ways your fandom can be K-pop’s #TwitterBestFandom:

1. Be creative

Share different content of your beloved idols, because every tweet with the hashtag counts! Some fans post their original fan art for other fans (and even non-fans) to enjoy. Writer fans also incorporate the hashtags in the stories they post in threads called tweetfics.

You don’t have to be an artist or a writer  in order to share something. Lots of fans may feel pressured and obligated to do the same as others but you don’t really have to. You can post a witty tweet, a funny meme, or a viral fancam of your idol. It’s all up to you.

2. Be dedicated

Stay passionate as you show your love and support for your idols. K-pop fandoms in general are known for having strong commitment and dedication to their favorite idol groups. Fans have various ways of showing their support. Some make flashy advertisements, some produce art. Large fan bases also encourage other fans to participate in massive voting.

Everyone is free to participate in these, but simply proclaiming your love for your favorites is also enough. Creativity definitely adds plus points, but what matters most is that you stay true and dedicated to your idols, whether you’re loyal only to one, or you’re torn between multiple groups.

3. Be active

Twitter is the best platform fans (especially international ones) can rely on for first and fast updates on the K-pop industry. It is no different for voting events such as the latest Soompi Awards as well. Everything is fast paced.

A lot can happen in the blink of an eye when you’re part of the K-pop fandom. A long-awaited comeback, dating news, or even a member’s departure from a group. You never know what could possibly happen, so it’s important to catch up with the latest happenings and to stay as active as possible.

Showing your love and support for your favorite groups is just one way of thanking them for making you happy through their music. But it is important to keep everything in moderation. Dedication is a beautiful thing but it can be harmful to you and your idol when some fans begin to step out of line. Discipline is still the key to attaining a healthy fangirl/fanboy lifestyle for your fellow fans and your idols.
