Coca-Cola Philippines gets nod for leadership, sustainability in ACES Awards 2022

The Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability (ACES) Awards 2022 recently recognized Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. or CCBPI, the soft drink company’s bottling arm in the country, as among the Industry Champions of the Year.

The award was given last November to select companies which “have a distinct competitive edge, set the industry trends, and have commendable best practices in place.” The ACES Awards website also adds that the recognition is for “inspiring leaders and sustainability advocates” across various industries in Asia.

CCBPI President and CEO Gareth McGeown gave credit to the company’s over 10,000 employees, calling the award a testament to their passion and hard work. “Being cited as among the Industry Champions of the Year in Asia will further fuel us to keep pursuing our journey of service to Filipinos—through refreshing beverages and strong sustainability initiatives,” he said.

In keeping with its sustainability drive and commitment to recycle and reduce waste, CCBPI is eyeing to make 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025, to use at least 50% recycled material in its packaging by 2030, and to collect and recycle a bottle or can for each one it sells by 2030.

To achieve this, the company launched the first food-grade, bottle-to-bottle recycling facility in the country—PETValue Philippines. It is a joint venture signed in 2020 with Thailand-based Indorama Ventures to establish a safe and advanced recycling facility.

According to CCBPI’s website, the projected capacity of the now-operational PETValue, or the amount of used plastic bottles it can process, is 30,000 metric tons per year or about two billion pieces of plastic bottles, with an output of 16,000 metric tons a year of recycled PET resin.

The company reiterated that it is pursuing every opportunity to attain its sustainability and recycling goals by “making bold moves in sustainable use of water, energy, and packaging, among others.”

CCBPI added that “The ACES Awards has built a strong reputation as one of the most prestigious industry accolades—a fact underscored by the exclusive list of winners, which includes some of Asia’s most renowned business leaders, corporations, and brands, and now, Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc.”

Aside from CCBPI, other Philippine companies that were recognized by ACES Awards this year were BDO Unibank, Inc. and Globe Telecom.
